From your question
to the right practice
Thirteen families of methods is a lot of knowledge. Two compasses make it simple: the four aims show where your question lives, and the four kinds of karma show what you can change and how.
Where does your question sit?
Every concern in life falls into one of the four purusharthas. Find the direction, and you know which families to turn to.
Moksha मोक्ष
Liberation, inner peace
- Spirituality: reflection, beliefs, connection to nature, compassion, realisation
Kama काम
Desire, pleasure, enjoyment
- Love: relationships, romance
- Appearance: aesthetics, fashion, self-love
- Friends: social and cultural exchange
- Recreation: hobbies, pleasure, leisure
Dharma धर्म
Duty, service, harmony
- Family: roles and responsibilities
- Community: volunteering, social responsibility
- Environment: stewardship and care
- Health & wellness: well-being as a duty to self and society; diet, exercise, fasting
Artha अर्थ
Wealth, means, achievement
- Career: work, profession
- Money: finance, investing, asset management
- Self-growth: goals, habits, skills, expertise, reading, education
Name your concern, and find its direction on the compass.
What is given, and what is yours
The Sun axis runs east–west and the Moon axis north–south. Some of what we live is fixed at birth; much of it is still ours to shape.
Bhāvānubandha भावानुबन्ध
Bonds of feeling
The emotional ties, attachments and patterns of feeling that carry forward and draw people and situations to us.
Prārabdha karma प्रारब्ध
The karma we are born with
The part of past karma that has begun to bear fruit, for which we take this body on earth. Parents, place of birth and relations cannot be chosen.
Ṛṇa ऋण
Debts we carry
What we owe: traditionally to our ancestors, to teachers and sages, and to the gods and nature. Repaid through duty, gratitude and giving.
Kriyamāṇa karma क्रियमाण
The power of free will
The karma we create now, by what we choose and do. The universe is dynamic: used well, free will shapes how the rest unfolds.
Prārabdha is given; kriyamāṇa is ours
We cannot choose our birth, but we can choose our response. Yoga and prāṇa practices help clear prārabdha, alongside remedies such as dāna, giving.
Astrology shows the map, not the verdict
The birth chart reveals the prārabdha we carry, the yogas formed at birth and when they ripen. That knowledge is meant to guide free will, not replace it.
Destiny changes when we change
Knowing our karma is only the beginning. It is vital to work on ourselves: on our karmas, on the beliefs we hold, and on the mind itself, through breath and yoga.
Breath steadies the mind→a steady mind sees beliefs clearly→clear choices create new karma→destiny shifts
How the 13 families work together
Each family has a role: some diagnose, some time, some act, some clear. Move through them in this order.
Identify
Place the issue on the compass of the four aims: a career block is Artha, a strained relationship Kama, an ageing parent Dharma, restlessness Moksha.
Read the karma
Astrology finds the prārabdha in this birth, the yogas that shape it and the time of fruition through dashā and transits. The palm confirms the yogas.
Act with free will
Use kriyamāṇa: choose the right time, set a clear intention, arrange your space and act wisely.
Clear & sustain
The work on ourselves: breath and yoga to change the mind and its beliefs, which helps clear prārabdha; remedies that repay ṛṇa; and daily routines that hold it all together.
